  1. 23 de jul. de 2013 · I have come across people saying "kicking dirt in someone's face". I am wondering if it means to disregard someone or treat someone rudely? Thank you. :)

  2. 24 de feb. de 2019 · 1- Dust: is the dry powder that accumulates on furniture or in cupboards that are not cleaned properly. It can also be carried by wind. 2- Dirt: is the soil that plants grow in. It's damp or dry but not completely soaked in water. It has negative connotations and if it attaches to things, they are dirty by definition.

  4. 11 de may. de 2019 · So, just imagine someone being tied up and set free. It seems to me that only "free from" can be used in a passive structure: "The prisoners were freed from the enemy." The passive sounds quite odd with "free of": "The prisoners were freed of dirt." Dirt (typically) isn't a constraint. Watch out for metaphors though.

It has to have some sort of negative connotation, or at least neutral connotation. Thanks in advance. (If I did something wrong, I apologise.)

  7. 26 de ene. de 2010 · Jan 18, 2010. #2. You will see to and for after harmful. The most usual preposition is to. There are some cases where for seems to me to be impossible, e.g. "The poison was harmful for her." This seems to mean something like "was harmful as far as she was concerned." A similar situation occurs in "The news came as a shock to her."

  8. 15 de ago. de 2009 · I would agree with mgarizona's earlier comments. I know of one situation where "climb" must be followed by "up": when you are climbing and you end up on top of something like a wall or a horse. "I climbed up on the wall" and "climbed up on the horse." This is because there is a difference between being on top of a wall and being at the top of a ...

  9. 27 de may. de 2011 · Picture this: You are climbing a mountain and the person in front of you kicks some dirt loose. The dirt falls on your head and in your face. If you were lying on the ground the dirt would fall either in or on your face (in my opinion). Somebody can throw a pie in your face (but not on your face). A person can be shot in the face, but not on ...

  10. 26 de sept. de 2008 · Because the sand is a substance that you can sink into and that can cover your feet like mud or dirt, the preposition is "in". Because concrete or ice or the floor are solid and impermeable, you play on them.
