“Between 1936 and 1971, Ernest McFarland had the rare distinction across the United States of winning the triple crown of politics. He was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he became the Senate majority leader; Arizona’s Governor, and the state’s Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

His parents were both from Tennessee and headed west looking for opportunities. They were farmers as were their parents before them, in a succession from a long line of farmers.
McFarland was Senate majority leader from 1951 to 1953. In 1952 he lost his bid for the Senate to Barry Goldwater. Returning to Arizona, McFarland served as governor from 1955 to 1959. In 1964 he was elected associate justice for the Arizona Supreme Court and rose to chief justice in 1968.
As an attorney at McFarland and Fulbright, McFarland won an appeal that determined Winnie Ruth Judd to be insane. He took part in Miranda v. Arizona and served as Chief Justice in 1968. He is known as the "Father of the G.I. Bill."
McFarland became a U.S. senator in 1941, was named majority leader in 1951, and served in that capacity until his defeat in 1952 by Barry Goldwater. On November 2, 1954, McFarland was elected Governor of Arizona, and on January 3, 1955, was sworn into office.
