The Abbey Church of St. Alban, on high ground on the S.W. side of the town, is a large cruciform building, and one of the longest cathedrals in England.The oldest parts are built chiefly of flint rubble, Roman bricks and Barnack stone, taken from the ruins of Verulamium, and in the later work Totternhoe stone is largely used.
