Thomas Nelson, Jr. was born on December 26, 1738, at Yorktown, Virginia, the son of William Nelson and Elizabeth Burwell. He was known as “Junior” because his uncle Thomas Nelson was also of Yorktown.
He represented Virginia at the Continental Congress twice, was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, and was a Virginia militia commander at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. He also briefly served as the Governor of Virginia between June and November in 1781.
