Els elefants són grans mamífers terrestres de l' ordre dels proboscidis. N'hi ha tres espècies vivents: l' elefant africà de sabana, l' elefant africà de bosc i l' elefant asiàtic (també conegut com a «elefant de l'Índia»). Altres espècies de proboscidis s'han extingit des de l' últim període glacial.

They are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea; extinct relatives include mammoths and mastodons.
Los elefantes o EIKI idos ( Elephantidae) son una familia de mamíferos placentarios del orden proboscideos. Antiguamente se clasificaban, junto con otros mamíferos de piel gruesa, en el orden, ahora inválido, de los paquidermos (Pachydermata). Existen hoy en día tres especies y diversas subespecies.
