James W. “Jim” Ford (December 22, 1893 – June 21, 1957) was an activist, a politician, and the vice-presidential candidate for the Communist Party USA in the years 1932, 1936, and 1940.Ford was born in Alabama and later worked as a party organizer for the CPUSA in New York City.He was also the first African American to run on a U.S. presidential ticket (1932) in the 20th century.

Ford served in the military during WWI; after the war he was an active trade unionist in the American Postal Workers’ Union.
James W. Ford was born December 22, 1893 in Pratt City, Alabama, starting life as railroad worker at the age of thirteen. He attended Fisk University, and in 1917 entered the U.S. Army. Entering the labor movement after the World War, he played an active part in building the trade unions, joining the Communist Party soon after.
