Mario Schifano nació en Homs (Libia) en 1934. Su familia se trasladó a Roma durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Autodidacta desde pequeño y restaurador de cerámica de oficio, el artista adoptó un enfoque posmoderno y metacrítico que lo situó de lleno en los principales movimientos de la época.
