Se inició en un estilo modernista, en sintonía con la Sezession vienesa, con influencia de Gustav Klimt, pero desde 1905 inició una línea más personal, cercana al expresionismo.

Richard Gerstl is regarded as a pioneer of Austrian expressionism. As an enfant terrible of the Viennese art scene of the turn of the century, Gerstl opposed contemporary trends such as art nouveau. He never exhibited in his lifetime.
