To English-speaking audiences, Mühe was probably best known for portraying Hauptmann (Captain) Gerd Wiesler in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck 's Das Leben der Anderen ( The Lives of Others, 2006), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007.

Ulrich Mühe was a German actor and director, best known for his role as a Stasi agent in The Lives of Others (2006). He was also married to Susanne Lothar, Jenny Gröllmann and Annegret Hahn, and died of stomach cancer in 2007.
