Peter Martins (born 27 October 1946) is a Danish former ballet dancer and choreographer. Martins was a principal dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet and with the New York City Ballet, where he joined George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and John Taras as balletmaster in 1981.
In 1996 the Royal Danish Ballet presented Peter Martins’ new full-length version of Swan Lake, the last of the enduring 19th-century Russian ballets. Although it was also the last of the famed Tschaikovsky-Petipa classics, Swan Lake was actually the composer’s first ballet score.
Only the ninth full-length work to enter the Company’s repertory, Martins’ Romeo + Juliet is the second Shakespearean classic to be made into a full-length ballet for NYCB; the first, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was created by Balanchine in 1962.
