Originally a Celtic British settlement known as Verlamion, the town was conquered by the Romans and re-named Verulamium.
St Albans takes its name from the first British saint, Alban. [1] The most elaborate version of his story, in Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, relates that he lived in Verulamium, sometime during the 3rd or 4th century, when Christians were suffering persecution.
During the inter-war years, St Albans, in common with much of the surrounding area, became a centre for emerging high-technology industries, most notably aerospace, particularly with Hatfield becoming the headquarters for de Havilland.
