2 de may. de 2017 · As the 21st century dawned, a new wave of metal bands from the US emerged, spearheaded by Killswitch Engage, and virtually every last one of them, from Trivium to Avenged Sevenfold, exhibited an obvious debt to the Gothenburg sound.
Following the 1996 disbandment of At the Gates, critics dubbed this style the "Gothenburg sound", [25] and At the Gates, Dark Tranquility and In Flames as the "Gothenburg big three", credited as pioneers of melodic death metal.
Dark Tranquillity, along with At the Gates and In Flames pioneered what is now known as melodic death metal, or the Gothenburg sound (since all of them came from that city). Rhythm guitarist Mikael Stanne switched to vocals after Anders Fridén's departure.
The Swedish death metal scene did much to popularise the style, soon centering in the "Gothenburg metal" scene. The Gothenburg sound, as it’s affectionately known, combined the raw intensity of traditional death metal with melodic elements, giving birth to a whole new sub-genre. Who knew that a city known for its shipbuilding would also construct a sound that would sail across the world?

One-time frontman for In Flames before taking over vocal duties for Dark Tranquillity in 1994, Stanne has remained prolific, guesting with countless bands whilst also unveiling new projects like Swedish death metal luminaries Grand Cadaver and Gothenburg-supergroup The Halo Effect.
