In the 1970s, the Army National Guard assumed operational control of Camp Edwards from the U.S. Army, while around the same time, Otis became Otis Air National Guard Base. The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod was established on JBCC in 1970 and in 2008 assumed full responsibility for all airfield operations on the base.
In 1948, the U.S. Air Force obtained control of Otis Field, renaming it Otis Air Force Base, for an air-defense mission and assigned a fighter interceptor unit. Camp Edwards was reactivated in 1950 for troop training support during the Korean conflict, and numbers approached World War II levels.
Otis Air National Guard Base is named for pilot, flight surgeon, and eminent Boston City Hospital surgeon, Lt. Frank "Jesse" Otis, a member of the 101st Observation Squadron who was killed on Jan. 11, 1937 when his Douglas O-46A crashed while on a cross-country training mission.
