" 'Round Midnight " (sometimes titled " 'Round About Midnight ") is a 1943 [1] composition by American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk that quickly became a jazz standard and has been recorded by a wide variety of artists. A version recorded by Monk's quintet was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1993. [2] .

The recording is one of several dates Pepper made with Paich in 1959 and is the only one with Pepper as leader. The recording focuses on Paich's large group arrangements of modern jazz classics, including Denzil Best's "Move," Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," Gerry Mulligan's "Walkin' Shoes".
It was first released by Teddi King accompanied by Beryl Booker in 1954. Toni Harper – Marty Paich and His Orchestra released it on the album Night Mood in 1960. It was covered by Toni Harper – Marty Paich and His Orchestra, Judy Niemack, Vivian Lord, Julian Yeo and other artists.

A retitled “I Dig the Duke/I Dig the Count”, arranged and conducted by Johnny Mandel (but with incomplete and inaccurate personnel listings) is faster-paced and Mel clearly relishes the jazz potential of these compositions.
