Todays rap artist like Kodak Black, Lil Yachty and Lil Uzi Vert are not motivational rappers or storyteller rappers that inspire people. Most of their songs are not lyrical or rhythmic, but repetitive. These rappers are known as “Turn Up” rappers.

  2. For me, what I love about 90s hip hop versus more modern hip hop/rap is that it felt like it was about the lyrical prowess, how clever your rap could be. I feel like most modern hip hop is...lazy? They rely on swearing, repetition, or mumble/unintelligible words making them rhyme more easily.

Nothing sounds and feels the same as old-school rap. Even after a few decades, this music can get the party started even if the crowd has never heard these tracks before.

  5. In general, I tend to find that 90s hip-hop was more bare bones with rappers rapping over relatively simple beats with maybe a basic hook, whereas modern hip-hop typically has more detailed production and is as much about mood and feeling as whatever the rapper is rapping about.
