Die Académie Julian war eine angesehene, im Jahr 1868 von dem Maler Rodolphe Julian (1839–1907) in der Nummer 27 der Galerie Montmartre (heute Passage des Panoramas) im 2. Arrondissement von Paris gegründete private Kunstakademie. Sie unterhielt im Laufe der Jahre mehrere Ateliers in Paris und bestand bis zum Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges.

In 1885, the school had four hundred female students. The Académie would play an important role in the formation of American artists, from North and South.

En 1959, l'Atelier Met de Penninghen et Jacques d'Andon, du nom de ses créateurs, s’installe dans les locaux de l’Académie Julian, inauguré sous l’égide du représentant du ministre de la culture André Malraux, Gaétan Picon. En 1968, l'Atelier Met de Penninghen devient l’ESAG Penninghen, école supérieure d’art graphique.
