Biography. Al Joyner was a triple jumper who surprised the world by winning the 1984 Olympic gold medal. He had placed eighth at the 1983 World Championships, but upset Willie Banks at the Olympic Trials and came through in Los Angeles later in the summer.
At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles California, Al Joyner won Triple Jump Gold, becoming the first African American to ever do so. Originally from East St. Louis, Illinois, Al Joyner is the older brother to Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who would also go on to become an Olympic legend in Track & Field.
