Base del pensamiento de Ritschl es la separación kantiana entre el saber y la fe. Esta separación permite, según Ritschl, dar entera «libertad» a la ciencia para proceder de acuerdo con sus propios métodos, pero también a la fe para desarrollarse fuera de todo posible ataque por la ciencia.
Ritschl nació en Berlín. Su padre, Georg Karl Benjamin Ritschl (1783–1858), se convirtió en 1810 en pastor de la iglesia de Santa María en Berlín, y de 1827 a 1854 fue superintendente general y obispo evangélico de Pomerania. Albrecht Ritschl estudió en Bonn, Halle, Heidelberg y Tübingen.
