Su madre, Anne Stafford, condesa de Huntingdon, fue amante de Enrique VIII en 1510. El descubrimiento de la relación extramatrimonial supuso que el conde enviara a su esposa a un convento, y que el hermano de este dejara la corte por no querer estar al servicio del rey.
