Biography. Sculptor who combined naturalism and monumentality in his works and was one of the best-known and influential sculptors of his day. Powerful in its restraint, his most distinctive piece, the Adams Memorial (1886–91), is a seated, draped, brooding figure. [SAAM 1970.11]
