From 1979 to 2008, she was married to actor Bernd Herzsprung. One of her daughters is the actress Hannah Herzsprung . At 24 years of age, Engel opened up her first Boutique named "L'Uomo".

She was awarded her PhD in 2004 and worked as a visiting professor at Kent State University in the US in 2007/2008. From 2008-2013 she was head of the department for the inner city at the City Planning Office in Dresden.
