Bengt Robert Holmström (born 18 April 1949) is a Finnish economist who is currently Paul A. Samuelson Professor of Economics (Emeritus) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Together with Oliver Hart , he received the Central Bank of Sweden Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2016.

Starting in the late 1970s, Holmström and various colleagues undertook pioneering research on the design of employment contracts that are optimal.
Bengt Holmström Biographical . I was born in Helsinki in 1949. My sister Marianne was born in 1946. Our parents were married when the war against the Soviet Union ended in 1944. My father had spent five years on the front like so many young Finnish men. The post-war years were challenging socially and economically.
