It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and is also featured on the Nebraska list of heritage sites.

Today we honor Betty Shabazz (1934-1997), educator, civil rights advocate, and wife of Malcom X. Shabazz grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Years later she moved to New York City and became a nurse. It was there, in New York City, that she met Malcom X and married.
