Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major WAB 105, was written in 1875–1876, with minor changes over the next two years. It came at a time of trouble and disillusion for the composer: a lawsuit, from which he was exonerated, and a reduction in salary.
This approach was displayed particularly impressively in the 19th century German repertoire, which also forms the focus of this edition – with symphonies and solo concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Schubert, plus rarities such as the Symphonic Concerto for Piano and Orchestra composed by Furtwängler.
