The son of Italian Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was killed in a plane crash on August 7, 1941, while flying a prototype of a bomber produced by his father's company. The accident was caused by a faulty gas switch, according to an investigation. The dictator was devastated by the loss of his son and awarded him the Gold Medal for Aeronautic Valor.
