The school was opened on 15 July 1960 by the chairman of Parsons under the name, Wallsend County Technical School. It cost approximately £280,000 for the building work, the furniture and the equipment.

Burnside College is located on St Peter's Road in Wallsend. The college name relates to it's close proximity to Wallsend Burn. Burnside College has about 1,050 students aged 11 to 18. The first school on the site was Wallsend Grammar School, built in 1913, with it's entrance on Boyd Road.
