Carlotta Monterey (born Hazel Nielsen Tharsing; December 28, 1888 – November 18, 1970) was an American stage and film actress. She was the third and final wife of playwright Eugene O'Neill.
In 1922, Monterey was cast in a role that would change her life: the female lead Mildred Douglas in Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape. Portraying a wealthy “new woman” who hopes to pursue the profession of social work, Monterey delivered the infamous line that the laboring protagonist was a “filthy beast,” spurring him to revenge.
