King Cetshwayo was the last king of the independent Zulu nation from 1872 to 1879. He ruled during a period of conflict with the British and the Afrikaners, and faced challenges from his brother Mbuyazi and his son Umtonga. He reenergized the amabutho system and tried to stem the diffusion of power away from the crown. He died in 1884 at Eshowe, Zululand.
