Charles Boyer (French: ; 28 August 1899 – 26 August 1978) was a French-American actor who appeared in more than 80 films between 1920 and 1976. After receiving an education in drama, Boyer started on the stage, but he found his success in American films during the 1930s.
Charles Boyer studied philosophy before he went to the theater where he gave his debut in 1920. Although he had at first no intentions to pursue a career at the movies (his first movie was Man of the Sea (1920) by Marcel L'Herbier ) he used his chance in Hollywood after several filming stations all over Europe.

Charles Boyer founded the French Research Foundation in 1941 as a French research library used in motion picture pre-production work. He moved his library to West Hollywood during WWII and used it for his film 'Arch of Triumph' (1946) for research on costumes, buildings and furnishings of French history.
