Brigadier General Cornelius "Neily" Vanderbilt III (September 5, 1873 – March 1, 1942) was an American military officer, inventor, engineer, and yachtsman. He was a member of the Vanderbilt family.

Cornelius Vanderbilt III was active in the National Guard for over 33 years. In 1901 he was made a Second Lieutenant in the Twelfth Infantry Regiment of the New York National Guard. He fought in the border wars with Mexico, and in 1916 he served overseas as Commander of the 102 nd engineers.

While training at Camp Lewis the 13th undergoes several trials. One is the deadly Spanish influenza, brought to the camp by soldiers transferred from other army posts.
