The poet Nathaniel Tarn, a friend of Wevill, said she was unsettled by its characterization of her as an “icy, barren woman” and of David as “contemptible.” “Sylvia had a million times the talent, 1000 times the will, 100 times the Greed and passion that I have,” Wevill wrote just months after Plath’s death.

Wevill's poetry weaves an intricate mixture of cultural legend and autobiographical reflection in which he sets the understanding of his own life, its joys and various personal difficulties, against the suffering of other artists (Ezra Pound, Robert Schumann, Yasunari Kawabata) as if they are conduits to the solace that he seems to crave.
