Tristan first worked as a model before starting her acting career on stage in the early 1960s with a traveling exhibition, where she successfully played the role of Charlotte Corday in the production of "Marat / Sade". In 1968 she became a participant in the Jerome Robbins ' American Theater Laboratory.

In 1971 she appeared with Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland in the role of druggie prostitute Arlyn Page in the Academy Award-nominated film, Klute. Two years later, Tristan played the role of Coley in Scarecrow, a film that featured Gene Hackman and Al Pacino.
