(The Ineligibility Clause of the U.S. Constitution puts limitations, among other things, on the civil offices a sitting member of Congress may hold; Senator Baker serving as a brigadier general during the Civil War may have violated that Clause).

He was named after Lincoln's friend Edward Dickinson Baker, and the youngest Lincoln son to die. His mother spelled his name "Eddie," while his father spelled it "Eddy."

He was an experienced trial lawyer and part-time preacher both of which contributed to his development as an excellent public speaker and, over time, he became recognized nationally as a great orator, in demand at fairs, conventions, and political rallies.
