He was the son of the Arthur Stanley, 5th Baron Stanley of Alderley (1875–1931) and Margaret Evelyn Gordon (1875–1964). [1]
He was Liberal Member of Parliament for Eddisbury and also served as Governor of Victoria. His eldest son, the 6th Baron Stanley of Alderley, sold the family seat of Alderley Hall in 1938. He was married four times, the second time to Sylvia Ashley.

He was the son of the 5th Baron Sheffield and Margaret Evelyn Gordon. Lord Stanley of Alderley oversaw the loss of the family's ancestral estate at Alderley Park.
