Ernest Jeffrey Moniz, GCIH (/ m oʊ n iː z /; born December 22, 1944) is an American nuclear physicist and former government official. From May 2013 to January 2017, he served as the 13th United States secretary of energy in the Obama administration.
Ernest J. Moniz is a nuclear physicist, energy policy expert, and former U.S. Secretary of Energy. He is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems emeritus at MIT, where he also founded the MIT Energy Initiative and led the Future of Nuclear Power study.
Dr. Ernest Moniz is a former Secretary of Energy who served from 2013 to 2017. He was tasked with implementing critical Department of Energy missions in support of President Obama’s goals of growing the economy, enhancing security and protecting the environment. He was also a leader of multidisciplinary technology and policy studies on the future of nuclear power, coal, nuclear fuel cycles, natural gas and solar energy in a low-carbon world.

Moniz is the CEO of EJM Associates and the Energy Futures Initiative (EFI), a think tank that explores energy technology innovation, nuclear security and strategic stability, and environmental stewardship. He served as the 13th U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2013 to 2017 and co-chaired the Mission Innovation at COP21. He is also a professor at MIT, a co-founder of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and a Distinguished Fellow at the Emerson Collective.

He served as the 13th U.S. Secretary of Energy for more than three and a half years, leading the implementation of President Obama's climate and nuclear strategies. He will continue his work on policy proposals for a sustainable energy future and address climate change.
