Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton (6 October 1903 – 25 June 1995) was an Irish physicist and Nobel laureate who first split the atom. He is best known for his work with John Cockcroft to construct one of the earliest types of particle accelerator, the Cockcroft–Walton generator.

Ernest T.S. Walton was a Nobel laureate in physics for his contributions to the transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles. He was a professor of natural and experimental philosophy at Trinity College, Dublin, and a research scholar at Cambridge University. He also worked on hydrodynamics and nuclear physics, and received many honors and awards.

Ernest Walton won the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physics with his colleague John Cockcroft for producing the first artificial nuclear disintegration in history.
