Regarding Goolagong as #1 in early 1976: if emphasis was placed on the Slims results Evert's first round loss to Dianne Fromholtz at a Slims event that year would have hurt her a lot. In April of 76 you could also argue Evonne had a slightly stronger record in the majors ...

(w/Bud Collins, 1975) and found her thoughts on her early rivalry with Evert insightful, especially regarding their 1972 Wimby semifinal: "I enjoy playing [Chris Evert] so much, I always know the score, which means I'm ...
8 de feb. de 2002 · Evonne Goolagong spent two decades away from home, which isn't so bad when you're winning a couple of Wimbledons, four Australian Opens and a French Open along the way. I have to say that my all time favorite match-up was Evonne Goolagong vs. Chris Evert, especially during 1972-76 when Evonne had so much success against Chris. I think after 1976 Evonne only had two wins over Chris (Boston '78 and the big W '80). I guess I started this thread because my memory of ...
26 de abr. de 2019 · The one Chrissie-Evonne Match I would love to watch in full is the VS finals from 76 - that seems to be an absolute classic from all accounts. I think we were lucky in the UK with Wimbledon that we had blanket coverage and the women had good coverage especially compared to other slams - think that Austin-Evert US Open S/F in 1980 was not covered shocks me.
29 de jul. de 2003 · Martina wins in Chicago, and Evonne takes two tiebreak sets in Boston. And Martina completely dominates numerically thereafter, losing only 3 sets in the next 10 matches, including Wimbledon '78 with a very tough 3 setter I would like to see, and their final match in Sydney '82 on grass in three lopsided sets,6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
13 de feb. de 2002 · Evonne was born on Bendee Street in the tiny village of Barellan (population 450), the 3rd child of Ken and Melinda Goolagong. There is much fascination about the meaning of her aboriginal surname, Goolagong.
