Gustave Le Gray fue uno de los líderes de la fotografía francesa primitiva (entre 1847 y 1860), considerada hoy como una "edad dorada". La gran fuerza de este técnico sin igual radicaba principalmente en el lirismo a veces metafísico con que supo reproducir la naturaleza, en sus estudios del cielo o sus vistas del bosque de Fontainebleau.
