There has been much speculation about the origin of Gwauncaegurwen, or G.C.G as it was called by those who found difficulty in pronouncing the name. The standard Welsh dictionary has detetrmined that the original name was Gwaun-cegyrwen, and that cegyrwen is a small white flower which must have grown on the common at one time.
