Hadar HaCarmel ( Hebrew: הדר הכרמל lit. " Splendor of the Carmel "; or simply known as the neighbourhood of Hadar Hebrew: שכונת הדר, الهدار in Arabic) is a district of Haifa, Israel. Located on the northern slope of Mount Carmel between the upper and lower city overlooking the Port of Haifa and Haifa Bay, it was once the commercial center of Haifa.
Kehilat HaCarmel (Carmel Congregation) began in 1991 in the midst of the great wave of Russian-speaking Jews returning to their ancient homeland, and at the end of the Gulf War, after the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s missiles had bombarded the port of Haifa at the foot of Mount Carmel.
Established in 1920, Hadar Hacarmel was Haifa’s first Jewish neighborhood. It was designed by the architect Richard Kaufmann as a “garden city” and modeled on Tel Aviv, but in Hadar Hacarmel the slope of the Carmel Mountain ridge lent the neighborhood a distinctive, scenic aspect.
Kehilat HaCarmel is a community of Messianic believers located on Mt. Carmel in the city of Haifa. Centuries ago, on this mountain, Elijah confronted Baal’s false prophets and God moved in a miraculous way, sending fire upon the altar as recounted in 1 Kings 18. The people of Israel were transformed by that event.
