On Sept. 11, 1951, students arrived for the first official day of Helix High School. After four years of creative planning, financing and bureaucratic challenges—including a fight to keep the school from being named La Mesa High School—the student body gathered for Welcome Week. For incoming ninth-graders, things were friendly.
