Dès l'indépendance du pays en 1962, Hocine Aït Ahmed rompt avec ses frères d'armes, devenant un opposant au régime qui avait pris le pouvoir. Exilé en Suisse, il meurt en 2015, à 89 ans. Ses funérailles rassemblant près d'un million de personnes en Algérie.
