Ira Gershwin nació en Nueva York, el 26 de septiembre de 1898; era mayor que su hermano George.Ira desarrolló su talento para escribir y dibujar en la escuela secundaria, donde escribía una columna en el periódico de la escuela.Después de graduarse, asistió al City College de Nueva York, pero se retiró para dedicarse a la escritura. Ira retired at the age 58. In 1964, Ira added lyrics to three of his brother George's unfinished works. Ira Gershwin died in Beverly Hills, California on August 17, 1983. On Dec. 6, 1996, Ira was the first lyricist to be honored by a special tribute performance on the centennial observance of his birth, in New York's Carnegie Hall.
In 1926 Gershwin read PORGY, DuBose Heyward’s novel of the South Carolina Gullah culture, and immediately recognized it as a perfect vehicle for a “folk opera” using blues and jazz idioms. PORGY AND BESS (co-written with Heyward and Ira) was Gershwin’s most ambitious undertaking, integrating unforgettable songs with dramatic incident.
