Järvet is best known in the West for the role of Dr. Snaut in Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris, but he played in numerous other films both in Russian and his native Estonian. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1975, and the USSR State Prize in 1981.

Maist 1967 kuni aprillini 1970 oli ta lepingute alusel näitleja Tallinnfilmis, Mosfilmis ja Lenfilmis. Aastatel 1968 – 1992 oli Järvet Eesti Draamateatri näitleja, 1982–1987 Eesti Teatriühingu juhatuse esimees. Jüri Järvet suri 5. juulil 1995. aastal Tallinnas ja on maetud Metsakalmistule.
