Layton grew up in Hudson, Quebec, as the son and grandson of prominent Canadian politicians.
Jack Layton was a leader of the federal New Democratic Party from 2003 to 2011, who led the first NDP party to sit as Canada's Official Opposition in the House of Commons. He was known for his social activism on issues such as climate change, homelessness, AIDS and urban strategy. He died in 2011 after a battle with cancer.
