Par rapport "Aux Souvenirs d'Enfance" on reste dans cette Provence si chère à Marcel Pagnol mais on bascule dans le roman et non plus la biographie.

Jean de Florette is the first part of L’eau des collines, the novel diptych by Marcel Pagnol, which was adapted to the cinema by Claude Berri in 1986 (with masterly performances by Gérard Depardieu, Daniel Auteuil and Yves Montand). In a small village in Haute Provence, Le Papet and Ugolin covet a piece of land where a spring flows.
The point of the film is not to create suspense, but to capture the relentlessness of human greed, the feeling that the land is so important the human spirit can be sacrificed to it. To create this feeling, Berri stands well back with his camera. There are not a lot of highly charged closeups, to turn the story into a series of phony high points.

C’est l’épopée de l’eau nourricière sans laquelle rien n’est possible. Marcel Pagnol y développe l’histoire du père de Manon, évoquée sous forme de flash-back dans le film Manon des sources (1952).
