Known as the "Marrickville Mauler" after the area of Sydney where he was raised Jeff Fenech had a brief but meteoric amateur career in which he was twice Oceania flyweight champion and won medals at both World and Commonwealth championships in 1983. After winning his first two Olympic bouts he lost a close decision in the quarter-final.

Jeff Fenech has joined an elite group of boxers to have won world titles in four weight divisions after finally being recognised for one of sport's great injustices. More than 30 years after being controversially denied the super-featherweight belt, Fenech has been awarded the strap retrospectively at a World Boxing Council convention in Acapulco, Mexico.
