John L. Hennessy (Huntington, New York, 1952) earned a PhD in Computer Science from Stony Brook University in New York in 1977. That same year he joined the faculty at Stanford University, where he rose to become president of the institution (2000-2016) and now heads Knight-Hennessy Scholars, an international graduate-level scholarship program.

Bio. John L. Hennessy joined Stanford’s faculty in 1977 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. He rose through the academic ranks to full professorship in 1986 and was the inaugural Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from 1987 to 2004.
