  5. John Rankin was a white southerner who migrated to free territory and became an antislavery minister, writer, and conductor of the Underground Railroad. He composed a series of Letters on Slavery and founded the Free Presbyterian Church, which denied membership to slaveholders. He was one of the nation's best-known Underground Railroad conductors and inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's character Eliza Harris.
