Over his career he received numerous accolades including an Academy Award, and four BAFTA Awards as well as nominations for three Golden Globe Awards. In 1970, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1970 Birthday Honours for services to film, and in 2002, he was made a BAFTA Fellow.
John Schlesinger was an Oscar-winning director who made acclaimed films such as Midnight Cowboy, Darling, and Far from the Madding Crowd. He also directed for theater and opera, and died in 2003 at age 77.
